For years I was in the top five on Google, all you had to do was type in my first name. That was awesome... though it led to weird searches.

Content is what matters most. I didn't, and now that I'm writing again, won't worry about SEO. (Though I do pretty much what you do.) I will give it credit for some SEO tweeks done on my business sites & listings which have been a huge help for bringing in clients via search.

I suppose it depend on what you're writing for, but I struggle to even write a post on purpose to garner links or comments. I don't think that's what you're suggesting, exactly, but I guess I'm pretty old school in thinking you should write because you want to, because you must, because it's too good to keep in your own head - not for attention.

I think you are right in the sense you should worry about quality content first and SEO traffic later. You certainly should NOT center content around keywords just because they have high monthly search volumes. However, I do think it's worth it to explore keywords related to your content, once it is already written. Simple tweaks can make a world of difference without sacrificing any content in terms of quality or thematically. For example, changing a phrase from “twitter steps” “twitter guidelines” may yield a ton more traffic, but will make no difference to the reader.
