6 Simple SEO Steps

live simple

I am no SEO expert. But I know the basics, and have achieved some small wins on the SEO front.

The keywords I have reached top result on Google for do not have amazing traffic, but for my personal and professional goals, they are very helpful.

What I Do

  1. Place keywords in site/page titles, page descriptions, and meta data
  2. Link to my blog from my all “outposts” (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc)
  3. Link to my blog using my target anchor text from as many relevant websites as possible
  4. Write guest blog posts for others
  5. Recruit others to write guest blog posts for me
  6. Occasionally write “how to” or list posts that are more likely to get linked to

The largest lesson here is to get as many links as possible (with your target anchor text when at all possible).

The more remarkable and unique your content, the more link you will get. The more lesson based, educational your content, the more link you will get. The longer you deliver quality content and build relationships with other bloggers, the more link you will get. If you ever wonder what content does this best, check sites like Digg or Tweetmeme and look for trends.

Try not to focus too much on SEO. Focus on quality content and the SEO will follow. But, it does not hurt to target some of these simple steps along the way.

  • For years I was in the top five on Google, all you had to do was type in my first name. That was awesome... though it led to weird searches.

Content is what matters most. I didn't, and now that I'm writing again, won't worry about SEO. (Though I do pretty much what you do.) I will give it credit for some SEO tweeks done on my business sites & listings which have been a huge help for bringing in clients via search.

I suppose it depend on what you're writing for, but I struggle to even write a post on purpose to garner links or comments. I don't think that's what you're suggesting, exactly, but I guess I'm pretty old school in thinking you should write because you want to, because you must, because it's too good to keep in your own head - not for attention.
  • I think you are right in the sense you should worry about quality content first and SEO traffic later. You certainly should NOT center content around keywords just because they have high monthly search volumes. However, I do think it's worth it to explore keywords related to your content, once it is already written. Simple tweaks can make a world of difference without sacrificing any content in terms of quality or thematically. For example, changing a phrase from "twitter steps" "twitter guidelines" may yield a ton more traffic, but will make no difference to the reader.
  • Fair tips Patrick. Thanks for the input. I did not mean that the things I chose not to do are standard rules. It is just what works best for me.
